This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. About 50 A.D., Paul arrived in Athens where he preached to the philosophers. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, "What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, "He seems to be advocating foreign gods .” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? In Acts 14, 15, and 16 we see miracles, many conversions to Christ, and consequent persecution of the believers. The Good News is preached but it is only referred to; it is not specifically said. This includes Iconium, Lystra and Derbe. Perga and Attalia all in Turkey on Paul’s and Barnabas’ first missionary journey and beginning of Paul’s second in Syria, Cilicia, Derbe, Lystra, Phrygia, Galatia, and Philippi. In Acts 17 at Thessalonica (modern day Salonika) Paul preached the Gospel. When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. The Governor of Cyprus, Sergius Paulus, became a follower of Jesus. This is recorded in Acts 13. Also, in this chapter is Paul’s sermon at Antioch (Western Turkey). The tenth chapter of Acts tells of the conversion of a Roman Army Officer and many of his friends and relatives. Here is the last portion of the chapter. The preaching of Christ crucified started in Jerusalem. After Stephen was martyred all of the followers of Jesus (thousands of them) left Jerusalem and preached the message wherever they went. Two examples are given of Philip (one of the seven appointed when Stephen was appointed). The first is a city in Samaria, a place north of Jerusalem. The Samaritans were not Jews but they had lived in the land since 700 B.C. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. So there was great joy in that city. Stephen was one of seven chosen by the believers and appointed by the apostles for special service. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. The apostles continued to preach the death and resurrection of Jesus. The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. After the two thousand received Christ, Peter and John spent the night in jail. The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. He is “ 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. 'Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

The next major response to the preaching of the cross occurs in Acts 3 and 4. One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. From the book of John: Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!” So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

From the book of Luke: On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!
