Intelligent Design

A few weeks ago I commented that the expression “Intelligent Design” was the understatement of the ages. I realized then, that there are educators, courts, and legislatures in the country that think the expression is an over statement or absolutely false. In any case, the concept is not allowed to be taught.

Further reflection has caused me to think of the alternatives to Intelligent Design.

1. No design at all, Chaos, disorder, cacophony.

2. Design, but obviously not intelligent, sort of like a preschooler’s
scribbling.

3. Apparently intelligent, but no design. Sort of like an astrophysicist
playing with legos that do not fit with each other.

4. Neither intelligent nor designed. Time plus chance plus nothing. Sort of
like 6 billion people (all of us) winning 6 billion different lotteries,
each with a probability of 1 billion to one.

There are probably other alternatives then these mentioned, but being a man of little faith I will stick with the understatement, “Intelligent Design.”

Why Is Obedience So Hard?

There are several reasons why obedience seems hard. I will comment on some of them and then speak positively on how obedience is easy. We think: 1) Obedience is an infringement on freedom. Since we are free in Christ, and obedience is somehow contrary to that freedom, we conclude that obedience is not good. Yet we know it is good. Thus, we become confused about obedience and are not single-minded. 2) Obedience is works. We who have been justified by grace through faith are opposed to works; therefore, we are opposed to obedience. 3) We have tried to obey and have failed—frequently. Therefore, the only solution is to disobey and later confess to receive forgiveness. It is easier to be forgiven by grace than to obey by effort. 4) We confuse obedience to men with obedience to God.
